Congratulations Dr. Efrat Shimron on joining the faculty community!

Dr. Shimron is a Technion alumni, holding a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Electrical Engineering, a master’s degree in Medical Sciences, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. After completing her studies, she worked in the industry in Israel for several years before embarking on post-doctoral studies abroad at the Universities of Berkeley and Stanford.

During her free time, Dr. Shimron enjoys engaging in water sports, especially stand-up paddling (SUP), and traveling.
Her research focuses on the fascinating field of developing computer vision methods for medical imaging through MRI. These devices allow obtaining rich information about the human body without ionizing radiation.

Dr. Shimron shared: “The lab I am establishing will develop AI methods for medical imaging with an emphasis on personalized medicine. Specifically, the research focuses on developing methods and algorithms to shorten scan times and reduce distortions caused by motion during the scan, such as breathing and patient movements. Such methods are crucial, especially for children, as they tend to move a lot during the scan.

Another area of research involves developing methods for imaging using small, portable, and affordable MRI devices based on innovative technology. Due to their high availability, these devices will be widespread in the future and able to provide immediate responses to patients. However, to achieve this, we need to develop methods that overcome challenges related to image quality.”
