BSc – Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering

The program’s diverse curriculum, with its high-level mathematics and science courses, forms a solid foundation for students to specialize in any subject of choice within the framework of their elective courses.

The first phase of the program imparts broad knowledge in the exact sciences and engineering, in combination with the life sciences and medicine.

In the second phase of the program, each student chooses the track in which s/he wishes to specialize.

Program Length: 4 years.

All biomedical engineering undergraduate students will specialize in at least two elective major tracks* in addition to the required subjects:

  • Medical signals and imaging – Diagnostic and therapeutic devices, non-invasive techniques, imaging techniques, medical signal and image processing, physiological control systems, optics and ultrasound applications.
  • Biomechanics and flow – Cell and tissue biomechanics, flow in biological systems, artificial organs, internal implants, orthopedic/neurological rehabilitation, rehabilitative engineering, devices and aids for the disabled, neuroscience.
  • Tissue engineering and biomaterials – 3D printing of organs and tissues, stem cells applications, nanoparticle development and medical biomaterials, biosensors, organ-on-a-chip, controlled drug release.
  • Medical Biophysics– Microscopy and optical imaging, biomolecular sensing methodologies, medical diagnosis based on biomarkers, liquid biopsy, structural biology, genomics and proteomics.

* Major tracks are not specified on the diploma.

Technion admission options

There are several acceptance options for the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering. The admission process is administered by the Technion undergraduate admissions center. Admission based on academic background (partial or complete)

Candidates who have completed two or more semesters in an academic framework (at the Technion or at another recognized academic institution) can apply to the Faculty based on academic background. Admission based on academic background will take place with the approval of the Faculty Admissions Committee and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Admission and transfer terms can be found below.

Application for course exemption: Part I must be filled in and submitted to the Faculty secretarial office.

The Excellence Program of the Biomedical Engineering Faculty offers: a scholarship upon admission to the program; partial Faculty funding for the presentation of a research project at conferences; teaching compensation for faculty workshops; lab rotation option in the fourth semester and summer semesters, as is customary in the world’s leading laboratories; individual guidance by Faculty researchers; an additional scholarship during the first year of the master’s/doctoral program; a fourth-year research project that can be developed into a graduate studies topic; and more.

Students can join the program in their second year of their BSc studies. A call for application is sent on November.

A student’s academic status will be deemed “unsatisfactory” if at least one of the following conditions holds:

  • The student’s cumulative weighted grade average is less than 65.
  • The student’s “course success rate” is less than 66%.
  • The student’s status was unsatisfactory in the previous semester, and s/he has not successfully completed the program of studies determined for him/her.
  • The student did not complete his/her physics placement exams within the necessary time period.
  • The student did not complete his/her English requirements by the end of the fourth semester of his/her studies.
  • The student did not complete his/her Hebrew studies by the end of his/her second semester of studies.
  • In the first two semesters of his/her studies, the student has accumulated fewer than 27 credits of the recommended courses in the study track in which s/he is registered.

A student with an unsatisfactory academic status will be invited to his/her academic unit for counseling and guidance. The academic unit will meet to discuss and, according to the severity of the student’s situation, will recommend conditions for the continuation of his/her studies (e.g., setting a mandatory curriculum for one semester/year, or other requirements) or the termination of said studies.

During these deliberations, the student will have the right to present his/her viewpoint, and consideration will be given to both special circumstances (such as reserve duty) and the opinion of the Advancement of Students Unit. Students whose studies have been terminated may appeal to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the Ulman Building. Students whose academic status was unsatisfactory when their studies were terminated or when they terminated their studies may submit a request to return to their studies two years after the date of termination of their studies.
